Born in Preston, Lancashire, Anthony Devis was an English topographical artist working in oils, full watercolour, pen and ink and wash.
He exhibited at the Free society of Artists, and The Royal Academy between 1761 and 1781 when he appears to have retired as a professional artist, but not from art itself.
From 1780 until his death in 1816 he lived at Albury House, near Guilford, and much of his
later work is taken from the landscape around there.
